The Complete Local DevOps Lab Stack

Cloud Engineering Architecture

You don't need cloud credits to practice DevOps. These tools turn your laptop into a mini production environment:

Tool 1: Docker Desktop

The foundation. Runs Linux containers on Windows or Mac. Includes Docker Compose. Free for personal use. Install this first โ€” everything else depends on it.

Tool 2: Minikube (Local Kubernetes)

# Install minikube
brew install minikube # macOS
# Or download from minikube.sigs.k8s.io for Windows

# Start local K8s cluster
minikube start --cpus=4 --memory=8g --driver=docker

# Enable useful addons
minikube addons enable ingress
minikube addons enable metrics-server
minikube addons enable dashboard

# Access dashboard
minikube dashboard

Tool 3: LocalStack (Local AWS)

# LocalStack simulates 60+ AWS services locally
# docker-compose.yml
version: '3.8'
services:
  localstack:
    image: localstack/localstack:latest
    ports:
      - "4566:4566"
    environment:
      - SERVICES=s3,dynamodb,lambda,sqs,sns,iam
      - DEBUG=1
    volumes:
      - localstack_data:/var/lib/localstack
      - /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock

# Use it exactly like AWS but point to localhost:4566
aws --endpoint-url=http://localhost:4566 s3 mb s3://my-test-bucket
aws --endpoint-url=http://localhost:4566 s3 ls

Tool 4: act (Run GitHub Actions Locally)

# Run your GitHub Actions workflows on your laptop
brew install act

# Run the default workflow
act push

# Run a specific job
act -j build-and-test

# This lets you debug pipeline YAML without pushing to GitHub

The Complete Local Lab Architecture

  • Minikube โ†’ local Kubernetes cluster
  • LocalStack โ†’ local AWS services (S3, DynamoDB, Lambda, SQS)
  • act โ†’ local GitHub Actions runner
  • Prometheus + Grafana โ†’ monitoring (via Docker Compose)
  • ArgoCD โ†’ GitOps controller (installed on Minikube)
  • HashiCorp Vault โ†’ secrets management (Docker)

Total cost: โ‚น0. Total learning: equivalent to working at a real company.

๐Ÿ’ก Minimum laptop specs for this lab: 16GB RAM (8GB absolute minimum, painful), 4-core CPU, 50GB free disk space. An old gaming laptop from 2019 works fine. Budget machines with 8GB RAM can run a smaller version โ€” just 2 tools at a time.
